The government is set to overhaul the UK's road safety laws in what is expected to be the biggest shake-up of driving rules for almost two decades. The reforms will feature in a new road safety strategy that the government is set to unveil this autumn, amid concerns that current safety campaigns are ineffective.
Between 2000 and 2010 serious road casualties almost halved to twenty four thousand but since then have risen by nearly 20 per cent. Drivers over the age of 70 would be banned from the roads if they fail compulsory eye tests under the government's new plans.
As part of the new plan, the government are looking at tougher drink drinking regulations, which would see the drink-drive threshold reduced from 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath to 22 micrograms - bringing it in line with Scotland's existing limits.
